Stable housing is an important predictor of health for those living with or at risk of HIV because it directly impacts their ability to access care and prevent the virus from spreading. Programs, such as the HIV Emergency Shelter Allowance in Fort Lauderdale and Chicago, have helped more than 28,000 low-income individuals with HIV obtain safe homes.
Significant gaps still exist, however, as 2,735 low-income HIV-positive individuals continue to face housing instability. Advocates are calling on states to include more equitable rental assistance in their budgets to ensure that no one is left behind in the fight against homelessness and HIV.
